By 1996 the Mini had largely remained unchanged for over 30 years, and with increasingly tough car safety measures being introduced the Mini needed to be brought up to date to comply with modern safety standards. The largest overhaul of the Mini to date took place modifying many small aspects from rerouting the engine's oil galleries to modifying the front subframe and engine block to reposition the radiator and introduce a multi-point fuel injection system. Rover MEMS2J electronic engine management system. Quad dry coil twin spark tech, electric cooling fan, 65amp alternator (up from 45amp), poly-vee belt alternator/water pump, airbag, seatbelt pre-tensioners, side impact door bars, immobilizer and alarm, rear silencer exhaust box, two speed heater, intermittent wipers.
